What is macular pigment?
The color of the macula is a yellow pigment that we take in with our diet. It consists of 3 nutrients: lutein, meso-zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin.
It is located in the macula (the yellow spot), the central part of the retina responsible for optimal accurate vision.
What does macular pigment do? Macular pigment has two main functions:
Macular pigment absorbs harmful radiation (short-wavelength blue light):
• By filtering out blue light, the macular pigment protects the retina from light damage that contributes to the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
• Blue light specifically causes glare intolerance. By selectively filtering this wavelength, macular pigment improves vision and reduces reflections.
Macular pigment is an antioxidant: • At the cellular level, the generation of free radicals by exposure to light and oxygen leads to oxidative stress (the same process that causes aging).
